Chennai Rain 2015 | Tamil Nadu ,India
Chennai Rain day was not at all easy to move on that none of Chennaities would forget the date December 1st, 2015 since nature had played his card very well in the form of non-stop torrential rain. I recalled that people had never considered it seriously despite warning was issued through social media. That day had started with the cloudy and drizzling morning. I never had a presumption of such worse day that going to happen and so I rushed myself to hit the gym by cycle since it was a usual day. It turned dark like anything after 9 am and it was quite windy. I assumed that it would last for a while since no depression or no low pressure was encountered in our own Bay of Bengal. But it was pouring with maximum intensity. Though I waited more than half hour to leave for home I did not find any sign of stopping the rain. I took my guts to ride in such torrential rain accompanied by the wind for 2 km and drenched completely. Sewage pipes started getting block and water were raising in unimaginable pace which troubled me to peddle. A kind of adventure and water sports game it was alike.
It was just small through which elongated throughout the coast had dumped two months rain in 24 hours. Many parts of Chennai experienced a power cut, poor mobile signal and most importantly internet access. Most of the lakes were filled from previous months rain which leads to breach on that day and people were asked to return home since many roads were closed down. Some parts of City recorded more than 500mm within 24 hours and it was a hot topic on national news. Many malls opened for people who stranded in rain throughout the night. I was constantly updating the situations via social media and my contribution for flood victims is very small though I have used all opportunities in all possible ways.
On December 2nd morning, I heard that water outflow from one of the biggest lakes has been drastically increased and occupied many parts of the city since its going through the heart of the city. Saidapet, Kotturpuram were totally cut off and isolated for a while. I was trying to commute but was not able to go beyond 4 km since most of the roads were filled with 5 to 6 feet of water. I did not like to portray something that was sympathizing through my photographs and so the first place I had visited was Marina beach. I just went there to check the situation. People from nearby area visited the beach and enjoyed by taking bath though it was considered to be disease prone one. I had a ride to Adayar estuary to see the outflow of lake water but it was a bumpy one. On that noon, I had a visit to Alwarpet but it was completely cut off from Anna Salai. It was chaos evening since people started looking for alternate shelters like school, college and high-lying areas. I tried to portray how strong we people were despite all odds were being faced.
I framed a watchman of Petrol bunk in which he reported his duty in spite of such difficulties. Volunteers from various parts of the city had put tremendous effort to recover our City from such worse natural calamity in spite government bodies failed to react on time. Please check the images below
