Kummatti Kali & Puli Kali in KizhakkumPatra & Thrissur to mark Onam Celebration
Kummatti Kali is considered to be prominent colorful mask dance of Kerala, prevalent in Thrissur, Palakkad and South Malabar Region. The word “Kummatti” refers to the Face mask and “Kali” means dance. During the festival of Onam, they usually roam from one street to another street, collecting gifts and entertaining people. Costumes, face masks are the most important facets of Kummatti kali since their skirt is made of plated glass and mask depicts God faces like Krishna, Vishnu, Ganesha and Yani. Some people cover their body with a bunch of grass for a more bushy appearance. Moreover, the dance movement is based on the rhythm of chenda melam and onavillu. The themes of kummatti kali are based on the stories of Ramayana, Dharika Vadham, the story of Shiva and folk tales.
