The Life in Wahlyngkhat Village, East Khasi Hills

wahlyngkhat

Wahlyngkhat is a beautiful place in the East Khasi Hills district, nestled to the Sohra mountains, Meghalaya. After a long drive to Dawki, our driver halted at this beautiful place and asked if we are interested in fresh seafood since the village’s fish market is quite popular and people from Bangladesh throng the village for selling them. I decided to walk down along with him even though I could not keep up with his pace due to a muscle cramp. The path to the village is a cemented staircase in the middle of a shallow jungle. The view from the bridge was quite mesmerizing and enthralling. I was stunned to see the villagers speak very good English and later came to know that the native language of this village is English. Their routine is not at all easy and their life in this place is very hard. But I will always remember the warm smiles, simplicity and the enthusiasm of the people. I believe Wahlyngkhat will emerge as the cleanest village in short distant future.
